When Catherinette and William Mullarkey from Coventry discovered they scooped £1.000.000 they started screaming and jumping of joy. After the news sunk in, it was time for making the plans – they will use some of the money to pay off their loans and buy a new house, but they also intend to help out their relative who was recently severely injured in a road accident.
The couple discovered their incredible victory after receiving an email from the National Lottery – they thought it was spam at first, but their granddaughter Celia encouraged them to read it and contact the lottery officials.
“We couldn’t believe it when we saw a message come up to say ‘Congratulations you’re a winner!’ And we couldn’t take in the figure that came up on the screen. We weren’t sure if it was £10.000 or £100.000 at first,” recalled Mr. Mullarkey.
There was a lot of screaming and excitement in their house afterwards, and they celebrated a victory with a nice cup of tea and a sleepless night. Their first priority is to help Catherinette’s nephew, Messiah Philip, who was paralysed from the waist down in a bike accident two months ago. In addition to adapting Messiah’s home and car, they also intend to pay off their debts, buy presents for friends and family and build a house in Saint Lucia, Catherinette’s homeland.
“You buy a lottery ticket and you dream what it would be like to win but for this to happen to us is just completely mind blowing. I have to keep pinching myself,” said Mr. Mullarkey.
